Why Energy Work for Kids?

Lately it feels like every scroll through a parenting group brings another post about anxious kids, trouble sleeping, big emotions, or school struggles.
Parents and caregivers are searching for answers - asking about pediatricians, therapists, medications, or supplements that might help their child feel better.
And while many of those supports can be incredibly helpful, energy work offers something unique. It meets kids exactly where they are, without requiring them to explain, perform, or even fully understand what they're feeling, or why they're feeling it.
What is Energy Work, and Why Would You Do It on Children?
Enery work, like Reiki, offers a safe, calming space for children to relax and be supported at a deeper level. It allows their body to settle and receive loving, healing, universal life force energy. Typically, receiving this energy helps them feel more grounded, regulated, and like themselves again.
Instead of talking through a problem, trying to figure out why it's happening, or trying to "fix" a behavior, energy work helps by helping the body shift into a state of calm, safety, and regulation.
For kids, this is huge, because:
Sometimes they can't fully articulate what's wrong (some adults can't do this either!)
Their behaviors are often expressions of overwhelm or overstimulation
Their systems are still developing and are highly responsive to subtle shifts

In my work with children, I typically find that energy healing provides an opportunity for their energy field to release stuck emotions or process something, with a quick return to normal. Or, the child has a quick moment of insight ("I see why my teacher said that!" or "No wonder so-and-so was being mean to me.").
Why Children Respond So Well to Reiki
In my experience, kids usually don't resist the process the way adults often do.
They don't overthink it. They don't question it. They're more open to it.
And when they realize that what we're doing is different from a typical therapy or medical appointment - when they discover that they can show up however they want, say whatever they want, and essentially do whatever they want - they drop in and receive faster.
What Can Energy Work Help With?
Here are some of the most common reasons parents bring kiddos in for a session (that I've also observed with my own children), and why energy work with kids can help:
Anxiety & Worry
Children today are navigating a lot - social situations, school expectations, hobbies and activities, overstimulation, etc.
Energy healing can help:
Calm the fight-or-flight response
Create a sense of internal safety & self-trust
Reduce physical symptoms like stomachaches and fidgeting
For example, a child who struggles with school drop-off anxiety may begin to feel more grounded and less reactive over time.
Big Emotions, Tantrums, or Meltdowns
We are humans, and humans feel emotions. There is nothing to fear about feeling emotions! But sometimes, frequent emotional outbursts are a sign that a child's nervous system is flooded or overloaded.
Energy healing can:
Help with processing or releasing built-up emotional energy
Support emotion regulation
Shorten the intensity or duration of meltdowns
Help the child return to a calm state after an emotional outburst more quickly
For example, a child who typically goes from "0" to "100" when they don't get their way may begin to have more space between the trigger and their reaction.
Sleep Struggles
This is a big one I see in my office! Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep is often tied to a dysregulated nervous system, or trouble letting go of the day's happenings.
Energy work supports:
Deeper relaxation before bedtime
Easier transitions into sleep
A more settled body at night
For example, children who previously needed long bedtime routines may seem calmer and need fewer steps to feel ready for bedtime.
Identity Issues, Feeling "Lost", or Feeling "Weird"
Some children are deeply sensitive to environments, energy, and other people's emotions, and this can lead to children feeling different from others, or that they're misunderstood and can't advocate for what would actually be helpful.
This is one I'm really passionate about, as someone who often feels like they don't belong or people don't really understand them. Energy work has helped me reconnect with myself, and understand in a profoundly deep way - there is nothing wrong with me. I may feel and sense things differently than other people, but that is a neutral thing about me.
Energy work can:
Help children feel more grounded in themselves
Support confidence in social settings
Reconnect kids with what makes them unique and special
For example, a child who feels drained after school may come home with more energy and stability, as they are more connected to what they need.
Transitions & Life Changes
Moves, new schools, changes in health status - even positive ones - can be a lot for a child's (and adult's!) nervous system.
Energy work helps:
Create a sense of stability during change
Process emotions that haven't been expressed (yet)
Support resilience and adaptability
What a Session For Kids Looks Like
Sessions with children are intentionally flexible and child-led. They may lie down, sit, or move around the space as they'd like.

Sessions are often shorter because children can drop in, receive, and integrate more quickly than adults.
Most importantly, there is not expectation to be still or quiet. I have child-friendly toys and fidgets in my office if they would like to explore those, or they are welcome to bring in anything that would help them during the session.
Sessions can be conducted virtually, during nap time, or bedtime if preferred. I always reach out to parents and caregivers before a session to iron out details for what works best for their family.
A Different Way to Support Your Child: Energy Work for Kids
I'm finding that parents aren't necessarily looking for another thing to "fix" their child, or another medication to try or supplement to take.
They're usually looking for a gentle, supportive option that doesn't take a ton of time or repeated, regular sessions. They're looking for something where their child doesn't have to perform, sit still, or answer 100 questions. And most importantly, they're just looking for a way to help their child feel like themselves again.
When a child feels safer in their body, everything else becomes easier.
My clients tell me that their child:
Can handle emotions more smoothly
Fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer
Engage more confidently with the world around them
Just seems calmer and more like themselves
An important disclaimer - Energy work does not replace other forms or support, it complements them.
If you've been noticing your child struggling, and you're looking for something gentle, grounded, and supportive, energy work may be worth exploring.
You can send me an email anytime with questions, or book a session for your child.
